These types of foods are considered addicting, and they make weight loss harder as once you start eating these types of foods the body will crave it over natural foods. It’s claimed that these rich foods are what make it impossible for the body to make healthier decisions. The Daniel Plan isn’t described as a weight loss diet, but instead is meant to improve overall health which naturally will lead to weight loss. Therefore, losing weight is a consequence of making better decisions for your body and mind. The beginning detox is made to help train the brain to work better so it becomes less addicted to eating unhealthy foods. It claims that the brain is operated by an autopilot mode that takes willpower to break free from. For a comprehensive list of the top 1. The breakdown of the types of foods allowed is. The type of exercise suggested is known as burst training. This means one should have a high intensity 6. This can include sprinting then doing fast walking. This is known to be a healthy form of exercise, as it burns more calories than low intensity exercise. It also offers online support from other people who are also on the diet. This is to keep each other motivated to eat the right foods and exercise. There is also a Christian religious approach to this plan, as it’s advised to seek the help of god to also stay motivated. For those that aren’t religious it’s unknown if there are any special considerations. For a list of the top 1. The support from others is intended to come from people who are in the same church group. They don’t mention exactly how one will find these people, but it makes it seem as if one is to recruit other Christians to The Daniel Diet. EDITOR’S TIP: Combine this diet with a proven meal replacement such as 1. Shake for better results. The Daniel Plan Diet Quality of Ingredients. The diet emphasizes eating natural whole foods instead of processed goods. This is a healthy approach for a diet, but it’s unclear why the specific ratios of food were recommended. There’s no scientific explanation as to why there’s a split between 5. Without knowing the science behind this it’s impossible to determine what kinds of results are possible. A separate cookbook is also offered based on the same principles, though this comes at an extra cost. One also does not have to count calories, it’s just advised to follow a diet based off of the ratio of foods recommended. Much more information is needed before one can determine whether the kinds of foods recommended are truly better for weight loss than others. The details surrounding the quality of foods aren’t well explained. The link cited here has a top 1. The Price and Quality of The Daniel Plan Diet The kinds of foods allowed are healthy, but spending money on organic meats can become incredibly pricy. There’s also very little explanation as to the kinds of foods which are advised. One has to purchase the book in order to determine what it can truly do. This makes it impossible to determine the overall quality before buying it. A lot of the information that is presented in the book isn’t summarized for people to determine whether or not this is a good diet. Without first knowing the science of seeing any clinical studies, it’s difficult to judgewhat his diet truly has to offer. It also greatly relies on seeking the support of other people on the diet, specifically other Christians. For people who don’t follow this type of religion it makes it impossible to seek the support offered, as giving oneself to god is a required step. Business of The Daniel Plan Diet. This diet was created by a group of people. The main contributor was Rick Warren, an evangelical Christian pastor. He admits that he is still obese even though he helped create this diet. Mainly just general feel good type writing with very little useful information”The Amazon. People have criticized it for not offering comprehensive enough advice, and for suggesting obvious diet recommendations. This included complaints that the advice asked for people to cut out processed foods, but without suggesting any unique or unknown substitutes. There was also concern from non- Christians that the book was too tied to religion. Some found it impossible to follow this diet since the support is intended to come from religious church groups. Since this plays a major role, it might not be suitable for all. Click the link here to see a comprehensive list of the top 1. Conclusion - Does The Daniel Plan. Diet Work? Studies have shown that most vitamins, fluoride, iron, water, juice, formula and solid foods are not beneficial to healthy breastfed babies during the first six months, and some can even be harmful. There are certain cases where a vitamin supplement may be needed for a breastfed baby during the first year (see below for specifics). Nursing on the go doesn't have to be difficult. The American Academy of Pediatrics does recommend that all babies receive a vitamin K injection soon after birth to reduce the risk of hemorrhagic disease of the newborn, and routine vitamin D supplementation due to decreased sunlight exposure and an increase in rickets. Some very premature babies (weighing less than 1. Following is more specific information on baby’s needs for certain vitamins and minerals. Promoting breastfeeding is the best way to protect babies from Vitamin A deficiency. Vitamin A deficiency is rare in breastfed babies even in areas of the world where vitamin A deficiency is widespread. Breastmilk: A Critical Source of Vitamin A for Infants and Young Children (PDF format) from the LINKAGES Project. Also available in English, French, Portuguese and Spanish. If mom is thiamine- deficient, then adding additional thiamine to mom’s diet should increase the amount of thiamine in her milk (since this vitamin is water- soluble) to the necessary levels. Thiamine deficiency (beriberi) is rare in the United States. The levels of riboflavin in human milk are quite constant and are usually affected only by large maternal supplements (3x the maternal RDA). If mom is not getting enough vitamin B6, then adding additional vitamin B6 to mom’s diet will increase the levels in her milk to the required levels. FDA requirements for breastfeeding mothers for this vitamin are 1. If you smoke, add 3. Supplements of vitamin C for a mother do not significantly alter the amounts in breastmilk, as they remain fairly constant no matter what mother’s intake levels (assuming the mother is not vitamin- C deficient). According to the American Academy of Pediatrics Policy Statement on Calcium Requirements of Infants, Children, and Adolescents: No available evidence shows that exceeding the amount of calcium retained by the exclusively breastfed term infant during the first 6 months of life or the amount retained by the human milk- fed infant supplemented with solid foods during the second 6 months of life is beneficial to achieving long- term increases in bone mineralization. Factors that put your breastfed baby at risk for vitamin D deficiency (rickets) are: Baby has very little exposure to sunlight. For example: if you live in a far northern latitude, if you live in an urban area where tall buildings and pollution block sunlight, if baby is always completely covered and kept out of the sun, if baby is always inside during the day, or if you always apply high- SPF sunscreen. Both mother and baby have darker skin and thus require more sun exposure to generate an adequate amount of vitamin D. Again, this is a “not enough sunlight” issue – the darker your skin pigmentation, the greater the amount of sun exposure needed. There is not much information available on how much more sunlight is needed if you have medium or darker toned skin. Mother is deficient in vitamin D – there is increasing evidence in the last few years indicating that vitamin D deficiency is becoming more common in western countries. The amount of vitamin D in breastmilk depends upon mom’s vitamin D status. If baby gets enough sunlight, mom’s deficiency is unlikely to be a problem for baby. However, if baby is not producing enough vitamin D from sunlight exposure, then breastmilk will need to meet a larger percentage of baby’s vitamin D needs. If mom has minimal exposure to sunlight (see above examples) and is not consuming enough foods or supplements containing vitamin D, then she may be vitamin D deficient. The best way to get vitamin D, the way that our bodies were designed to get the vast majority of our vitamin D, is from sun exposure. Depending upon where you live and how dark your skin is, going outside regularly may be all that is required for you or your baby to generate adequate amounts of vitamin D. Because mom’s vitamin D status during pregnancy directly affects baby’s vitamin D stores at birth and particularly during the first 2- 3 months, it is very helpful for pregnant women to make sure they are getting enough vitamin D. Adding a vitamin D supplement to mom’s diet and/or exposure to ultraviolet light will increase the amount of vitamin D in her breastmilk. As long as mom is vitamin D sufficient, her breastmilk will have the “right” amount of vitamin D. However, babies were “designed” to get only part of their vitamin D from breastmilk and the remainder from sun exposure – what if baby does not get a minimum amount of sun? A 2. 01. 5 study . The supplementation of fluoride in the diet of a healthy breastfed infant is no longer recommended by the AAP. Evidence supports the contention that there is adequate fluoride in human milk, and fluorosis from excessive amounts is a concern. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that fluoride supplements only be given after 6 months, and only to children whose primary water source is deficient in fluoride. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry is slightly more conservative, suggesting that the caries risk to the individual child also be considered: “The AAPD endorses the supplementation of a child’s diet with fluoride according to established guidelines. Many city water systems add fluoride to the water. If you use well water or bottled water, it’s unlikely that fluoride has been added to your water, but it may still be there. Fluoride occurs naturally in most water, so you really need to know how much fluoride is in your water before you decide whether to supplement. How do you find out how much fluoride is in your drinking water? If you use city water, call your local water department to find out. If you use bottled water, call the bottling company. If you use well water, you can ask your local water department about having your water tested for fluoride – fluoride analysis isn’t very expensive. After you know how much fluoride is already in your drinking water and determine whether your child is at high risk for developing cavities, you can decide whether fluoride supplementation might be beneficial. Vitamin K is needed for proper blood clotting, and a deficiency of this vitamin causes a syndrome called Vitamin K deficiency bleeding (VKDB). Increasing mom’s vitamin K intake increases the amount of vitamin K in her milk. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends: Intramuscular vitamin K1 (phytonadione) at a dose of 0. A delay of administration until after the first feeding at the breast but not later than 6 hours of age is recommended. A single oral dose of vitamin K should not be used, because the oral dose is variably absorbed and does not provide adequate concentrations or stores for the breastfed infant. Starvation, ironically, induces the body to store fat because it slows down the metabolism. If you have been reading up on weight loss, you would have stumbled upon the idea of a low calorie diet. Low- calorie diets are effective in losing abdominal fat; however, once the hunger pangs become a regular occurrence, the diet becomes difficult to maintain and at the first possible opportunity, binging can occur. Furthermore, low calorie diets are not without inconvenient side effects such as mood swings, poor memory and hair loss to name a few. The symptoms worsen over time and can develop into illnesses or diseases, totally defeating the purpose of why it was necessary to lose weight for health in the first place. Knowing what to eat. To eat generously does not have to mean to eat irresponsibly. The important thing to remember is to eat natural and nutrient- dense foods as well as whole foods that the body understands how to use to properly. Below are some examples: 1. Apples - There is wisdom to the saying, an apple a day keeps the doctor away. In a Brazilian weight study, subjects who ate three apples a day while dieting lost more weight than those who didn't. This fruit contains pectin, a compound that is known to inhibit colon cancer. Apples are packed with nutrients and are a rich source of vitamin C, beta- carotene, dietary fiber, phytosterol, flavonoids, antioxidants, vitamins and minerals. Watermelons - In a study conducted by the University of Kentucky, watermelon was found to have a significant effect on artery plaque deposition because it altered blood lipids and lowered the risk of developing belly fat. The researchers in the study observed that animal subjects in the experiment who had diet- induced high cholesterol were given a supplement of watermelon juice while another group was given a typical diet with water. Eight weeks later, the animals given watermelon juice had lower body weight than those who were just given water. It appeared that there was no decrease in muscle mass and the weight loss was due to abdominal fat loss. Tomatoes - A large tomato contains only around 3. Moreover, a recent study identified a compound extracted specifically from the fruit called 9- oxo- octadecadienoic (9- oxo- ODA) which was shown to influence the amount of blood lipids in circulation. According to Dr. Teruo Kawada, the study leader, . This normally caused by diet and lifestyle. Bananas - This is a fruit you can enjoy as a nutritious snack without ever worrying about gaining weight. Like apples, it contains a fiber called pectin that is known to inhibit colon cancer. It also contains vitamin A, C, E, B6 as well as potassium, calcium and magnesium. Bananas, depending upon the size, contain calories between 7. Seafood - Seafood, when included in the diet, could result in a slimmer waist and better health. For those enjoying excellent health and ideal body weight, having seafood on a regular basis may even prevent possible future poor health and weight gain. Studies have shown that seafood has been found to contain monounsaturated fat (MUFA). Studies have also shown that having a regular diet with foods containing MUFA can prevent belly fat. Lamb - Lamb contains vitamin B, protein, zinc and trytophan. This is certainly a better option to processed or canned meat, and is a healthy source of protein. Lamb contains conjugated linoleic acid. According to Dr. James Howenstine, author of . Editor's note: I cannot condone eating lamb due to humanitarian reasons. Lambs are mammals, and it would be far less damaging to living beings if you chose to eat a simpler lifeform instead, such as fish. Tart cherries - In a study conducted by the University of Michigan, it was found that a diet containing tart cherries may help lower symptoms of heart disease and metabolic syndrome. Metabolic syndrome is a term used to refer to a group of symptoms which increase the risk of a host of heart diseases, diabetes and belly fat. In the study, the animal subjects had reduced cholesterol levels and a fat content of only 5. Tart cherries have also been identified to have antioxidant properties. Celery - Celery is a negative calorie food containing only eight calories. It is high in vitamin C, calcium and is best enjoyed raw. Enjoying fresh celery juice before a meal can even help you lose weight. It contains apigenin, an active compound that slashes the risk of ovarian cancer. Avocados - This fruit has anti- bacterial and anti- fungal properties. It contains the amino acid lecithin - which helps in preventing liver overload - and aids the memory and helps balance weight. In one study, it was discovered that people who ate a considerable amount of avocados showed clear improvement in health. It balances cholesterol levels and prevents heart attacks and strokes. Kelp noodles - According to Natural. News. com, kelp noodles are a good alternative for those who love traditional noodles. They are made from seaweed and contain only six calories. They are raw and mineral rich and can be used like any regular noodles. It's time to reconsider the low- calorie dieting theory and recognize that only natural foods can properly nourish the body and help it rebuild itself. Food can actually help us in attaining good health and proper weight management. When coupled with exercise, it can help us achieve sustainable weight loss, avoid obesity, prevent a host of other chronic diseases and increase health benefits that directly improve our quality of life. Sources for this article: http: //www. Dyslipidemiahttp: //www. Quick and Dirty Tips . Is there any truth to these claims?”. Well, yes and no. Certain food and lifestyle choices can help you reduce fat around your middle. So what’s the deal with all these fat- melting foods? Most of the foods you’ll see on such lists fall into one of two categories. Foods that Prevent Blood Sugar Spikes. Examples of this category of “flat- belly foods” include salmon, avocado, olive oil, almonds, and dried beans. Do these foods literally burn belly fat? But foods that contain protein, fat, and/or fiber are relatively slowly digested and absorbed, so they are less likely to cause a sharp increase in blood sugar. These foods can even slow down the digestion and absorption of carbohydrates from other foods that they are eaten with. The hope is that avoiding blood sugar spikes will also help prevent belly fat. And there is some research to support this theory. Related Content: Soluble Fiber to Burn Belly Fat. There are other potential benefits as well. As I’ve talked about in previous articles, foods that are higher in protein and fiber can also regulate your appetite and help you to avoid overeating. However, make no mistake: No matter what type of food you choose, if you consume more calories than you need, the excess calories will be stored as fat. Foods that Increase Metabolism. Examples of this second category of “flat- belly foods” are green tea, cayenne pepper, vinegar, as well as anything high in protein, such as eggs, meat, and fish. These foods supposedly boost your metabolism, causing your body to burn through your fat reserves—including the fat around your middle. While it’s true that these foods can increase your metabolism, the devil is in the details. A cup of green tea or a teaspoon of cayenne pepper might cause you to burn an extra ten or twenty calories per day, but it takes 3,5. Feel free to include these metabolism boosters in your diet but don’t expect miracles. In particular, focus on interval and strength training. A recent study found that alternating between brief, high intervals and recovery intervals was far more effective in reducing belly fat than exercising at a steady pace. Increasing your lean muscle mass with strength training will further increase the number of calories you burn and help reduce body fat. Cortisol is a hormone that’s secreted in response to stress. Replacing your daily commute with an hour on a meditation cushion may not be an option. However, most of us could turn off the TV (or tablet) an hour earlier and hit the sack—and this can have a profound and immediate effect on your cortisol levels. Your body perceives the lack of sleep as stress, you see. Those who skimp on sleep tend to have higher cortisol levels, which may help explain why under- sleeping is consistently linked with weight gain. It’s important to choose healthy foods but you also need to eat them in quantities that allow you to maintain a healthy body weight. Diagnosis and differential diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis. Literature review current through. May 2. 01. 7. It typically leads to deformity through the stretching of tendons and ligaments and destruction of joints through the erosion of cartilage and bone. If it is untreated or unresponsive to therapy, inflammation and joint destruction lead to loss of physical function, inability to carry out daily tasks of living, and difficulties in maintaining employment. What are the symptoms of reactive arthritis? The most common symptoms of reactive arthritis are arthritis, conjunctivitis, and urethritis. Circinate balanitis:A form of skin inflammation around the penis in males with Reiter's syndrome. The skin around the shaft and tip (glans) penis can become inflamed. Early recognition and treatment with disease- modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs) is important in achieving control of disease and prevention of joint injury and disability. However, in patients with early disease, the joint manifestations are often difficult to distinguish from other forms of inflammatory polyarthritis. The more distinctive signs of RA, such as joint erosions, rheumatoid nodules, and other extraarticular manifestations, are seen primarily in patients with longstanding, poorly controlled disease but are frequently absent on initial presentation. This topic will review the approach to the diagnosis and differential diagnosis of RA. The clinical features of this disorder, its extraarticular manifestations, and laboratory markers that are clinically useful in the diagnosis of RA are discussed in detail separately. The initial evaluation of such patients requires a careful history and physical examination, along with selected laboratory testing to identify features that are characteristic of RA or that suggest an alternative diagnosis. The absence of other conditions or symptoms suggesting an alternative diagnosis, such as psoriasis, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), or a systemic rheumatic disease such as systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), helps to exclude other disorders. Symptoms of arthritis that have been present for a short time (for example, less than six weeks) may well be due to an acute viral polyarthritis rather than to RA. The longer symptoms persist, the more likely the diagnosis of RA becomes. Thus, in patients presenting very early, close observation with frequent follow- up appointments is required, with repeated serologic analysis for anti- cyclic citrullinated peptide (CCP) antibodies, rheumatoid factor (RF), and acute phase reactants. In a minority of patients, several such visits are required before the differential diagnosis between RA and viral arthritis becomes established. The results of both tests are informative, since a positive result for either test increases overall diagnostic sensitivity, while the specificity is increased when both tests are positive. Despite this, both tests are negative on presentation in up to 5. RA. In patients with a positive ANA, anti- double stranded DNA and anti- Smith antibody testing should also be performed; these antibodies have high specificity for SLE. Liver and kidney testing abnormalities indicate a disorder other than RA; if caused by comorbid conditions, they may affect therapeutic choices or drug dosing. Conditions by signs and symptoms (A-D) Conditions by signs and symptoms (E-I) Conditions by signs and symptoms (J-O) Conditions by signs and symptoms (P-R). Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a symmetric, inflammatory, peripheral polyarthritis of unknown etiology. It typically leads to deformity through the stretching of. Dermatologic Signs of Systemic Disease Online Medical Reference - from diagnosis through treatment options. Co-authored by Lisa M. Grandinetti and Kenneth J. Balanitis is a medical condition in which the head of the penis becomes inflamed, red, swells, and has a rash, irritation, or pain. Balanitis symptoms may include an. T his is an arthritis characterised by an arthritis of the sacroiliac joints and the spinal ligaments, leading to progressive, ascending spinal stiffening and spinal. Hyperuricemia may prompt additional efforts, including arthrocentesis and crystal search, to exclude gout; polyarticular gout can infrequently be mistaken for RA. However, characteristic joint erosions may be observed in patients presenting with symptoms for the first time and, hence, aid in diagnosis. Additionally, in patients with other disorders, such as psoriatic arthritis, spondyloarthropathy, gout, or chondrocalcinosis, radiographic changes more characteristic of these conditions may point to an alternative diagnosis. In areas endemic for Lyme disease, we perform serologic studies for Borrelia as well. Synovial fluid testing should include a cell count and differential, crystal search, and Gram stain and culture. Synovial fluid analysis should also be obtained to exclude infection or crystalline arthropathy in patients who undergo glucocorticoid injections for symptomatic relief. However, MRI and ultrasound are more sensitive than radiography at detecting changes resulting from synovitis and may be helpful in establishing the presence of synovitis in patients with normal radiographs and uncertainty regarding either the diagnosis or the presence of inflammatory changes, such as patients with obesity or subtle findings on examination. The wrists are also commonly involved, as are the metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joints in the feet, but any upper or lower extremity joint may be affected. Symmetric polyarthritis, particularly of the MCP, MTP, and/or PIP joints, strongly suggests RA. Although distal interphalangeal (DIP) joint disease can occur in patients with RA, DIP involvement strongly suggests a diagnosis of osteoarthritis or psoriatic arthritis. Their diagnostic utility is limited by their relatively poor specificity, since they are found in 5 to 1. SLE, virtually all patients with mixed cryoglobulinemia (usually caused by hepatitis C virus . Higher titers of RF (at least three times the upper limit of normal) have somewhat greater specificity for RA. The prevalence of RF positivity in healthy individuals rises with age. Anti- CCP antibodies have a similar sensitivity to RF for RA but have a much higher specificity (9. The specificity is greater in patients with higher titers of anti- CCP antibodies (at least three times the upper limit of normal). Another test, anti- mutated citrullinated vimentin, gives similar results to anti- CCP and is used as an alternative in some laboratories . Normal acute phase reactants may occur in untreated patients with RA, but such findings are very infrequent. The degree of elevation of these acute phase reactants varies with the severity of inflammation. As an example, an ESR of 5. RA. By comparison, an ESR of 2. Although increased levels of acute phase reactants are not specific for RA, they are often useful for distinguishing inflammatory conditions from noninflammatory disorders that present with musculoskeletal symptoms (eg, osteoarthritis or fibromyalgia). Examples include the following. Such patients with seronegative RA differ from anti- CCP- positive patients genetically and in their environmental risks, disease severity, and clinical responsiveness to some medications . Additional research is needed to better characterize this population. These criteria were developed for the classification of patients with RA for the purpose of epidemiologic studies and clinical trials, not primarily for clinical diagnosis. Nevertheless, the same features that are of value in classification tend to be useful for the purpose of diagnosis in clinical practice. Further study is required to establish their utility as diagnostic criteria in general practice. The 1. 98. 7 ACR criteria were formulated to distinguish patients with established rheumatoid arthritis (RA) from patients with other defined rheumatic diseases; the 2. ACR/EULAR criteria for RA focused on identifying the factors, among patients newly presenting with undifferentiated inflammatory synovitis, which could allow for the identification of patients for whom the risk of symptom persistence or structural damage is sufficient to be considered for intervention with disease- modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs) . The highest score achieved in a given domain is used for this calculation. These domains and their values are. A patient was classified as having RA if at least four of these seven criteria were satisfied; four of the criteria must have been present for at least six weeks: morning stiffness, arthritis of three or more joint areas, arthritis of the hands, and symmetric arthritis. Rheumatoid factor (RF) was included as a criterion, but anti- cyclic citrullinated peptide (CCP) antibody testing was not available at that time. The other two criteria were rheumatoid nodules and radiographic erosive changes typical of RA, but these are generally not present in the early stages of disease. Thus, while these criteria were very good at separating inflammatory from noninflammatory arthritis, the major drawback of the 1. RA . On the other hand, the criteria did not require any exclusions, and patients could initially fulfill the diagnostic criteria but occasionally evolve into other diagnoses, particularly systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), Sj. Features of some disorders that are included in the differential diagnosis of RA are shown in the table (table 2). However, the syndrome is usually short- lived, lasting only from a few days to several weeks, and rarely beyond six weeks. Hepatitis C virus (HCV) can cause a polyarthritis or oligoarthritis in a minority of patients, but is more commonly associated with arthralgias. Serologic testing can help identify patients with HBV, HCV, or human parvovirus B1. Among all of the viruses that can cause arthritis, the alphaviruses are unusual because nearly all symptomatic infections in adults result in joint symptoms. The incubation period lasts from several days to three weeks; infection is typically associated with triad of fever, arthritis, and rash . However, all aspects of the triad may not be present, thereby making the diagnosis difficult. One such alphavirus, Chikungunya, has become a global disease with increasing world travel and has caused large outbreaks in Italy, India, Indian Ocean islands, and in the Caribbean region and surrounding countries . Patients with more persistent disease can mimic seronegative RA clinically to a sufficient degree to satisfy the 2. RA if the initial symptoms of fever and rash and history of travel to an endemic region are not appreciated . Serologic studies can help to document exposure to the Chikungunya virus. The diagnosis of alphavirus infection can be made by appropriate serologic testing in travelers from endemic areas with persistent arthritic symptoms. These infections are sometimes associated with the presence of RFs (usually in low titer), antinuclear antibodies (ANA), and elevated acute phase reactants. Things You Might Not Know About Dr Pepper. You already know that Dr Pepper has a unique, spicy flavor, but did you know its corporate history is just as crisp and interesting? It’s Got Texas Roots Like many beloved soft drinks, Dr Pepper was the product of experimentation in a pharmacy. Charles Alderton, a pharmacist at Morrison’s Old Corner Drug Store in Waco, Texas enjoyed experimenting with the flavored syrups at the shop’s soda fountain. Instead of just accepting the standard fruit flavors available at the time, in 1. Alderton mixed and matched flavorings until he had crafted a unique drink that customers loved. There May Have Been An Actual Dr. Pepper. i. Stock. Once Alderton perfected his new concoction, it needed a name. Patrons originally referred to the drink as “a Waco,” but Alderton’s boss, Wade Morrison, thought the elixir needed a catchier name. Morrison dubbed the drink Dr. Pepper in a nod to a Dr. Pepper who he claimed had been a colleague in his younger days in Rural Retreat, Virginia. In one telling of this story, Morrison had left Virginia for Texas after a love affair with Dr. Pepper’s daughter went flat, but signs point to this romantic origin tale being mostly urban legend. The Texas Soda Took the National Stage at the 1. World’s Fair Texas’s favorite soda fizzed its way into the national consciousness at the 1. World’s Fair in St.
As the Dr Pepper Museum notes, the drink joined the ice cream cone, the hamburger, and the hot dog in making their first big splashes at the event. Legally, It’s Not a Cola For much of Dr Pepper’s history, the drink was a regional delicacy confined to the South and Southwest. Coca- Cola and Pepsi had used their head starts on Dr Pepper to build nationwide networks of independent bottlers who had exclusive franchise contracts to turn their respective syrups into colas. Dr Pepper simply couldn’t crack into new markets with the deck stacked so squarely against it. That all changed in 1. A federal court ruled that Dr Pepper’s unique flavor kept it from being a “cola product,” which meant that bottlers were free to distribute Dr Pepper without running afoul of their exclusive deals with Coca- Cola and Pepsi. By the end of the decade, Dr Pepper was available from coast to coast. Coca- Cola Didn’t Take This Expansion Lightly. A terrific 1. 97. D Magazineprofile of Woodrow Wilson “Foots” Clements, the executive who took Dr Pepper national, chronicles Coca- Cola’s response to the upstart’s growth. In June 1. 97. 2, Coca- Cola announced Mr. Pi. BB, its in- house answer to Dr Pepper. The article contains some classic sniping between the two brands, with a Coke spokesperson dismissing any resemblance by saying, “I haven’t tasted Dr Pepper myself so I wouldn’t know how similar Mr. Pi. BB is to it. I don’t think it was meant to compete with Dr Pepper - as far as I know Coke just felt there was a market for this kind of soft drink. The executive crowed, . Pi. BB has just stimulated the taste for Dr Pepper. In fact, we’ve found that whenever they quit giving it away in big promotions their share of the market drops way down. There’s No Period In the Name It may have allegedly been named after a physician, but the correct styling of the name is “Dr Pepper,” not “Dr. Pepper.” The company dropped the period from the name in the 1. Most sources suggest that the revamped logo was easier to read without the punctuation, and Dr Pepper was reborn. It’s Not Just For Drinking Cold A cold Dr Pepper can be heavenly on a hot day, but very few families gather around their Christmas trees for a frosty soda in December. In the 6. 0s Dr Pepper tried to stimulate holiday sales by marketing hot Dr Pepper with lemon as a festive alternative tipple for winter gatherings. The ads found some traction in the South, but as you’ve probably noticed, warm Dr Pepper didn’t become a holiday staple. Still, hot Dr Pepper had its devotees. In the 7. 0s Foots Clements told multiple journalists that he would have three or four hot Dr Peppers in the morning and a half- dozen cold bottles every afternoon. The Original Recipe May Have Surfaced in 2. Six years ago, Oklahoma manuscript collector Bill Waters paid $2. Texas antique shop. Notations in the ledger referred to Morrison’s Old Corner Drug Store, examples of Charles Anderton’s handwriting, and a curious recipe for “D Peppers Pepsin Bitters” mixed from mandrake root and syrup. A spokesman from the Dr Pepper Snapple Group indicated that the notes were probably a recipe for bitter digestive aid rather than a soft drink, but the historical find went up for auction as the original formula for the beloved soda. Attendees at the auction agreed—the item did not fetch $2. Roanoke Can’t Get Enough of It. Dr Pepper fue creada por Charles Alderton, un farmacéutico que trabajaba en una tienda llamada Morrison. Whether or not there was ever a real Dr. Pepper in Virginia remains a matter of debate, but one Virginia city would rather drink a cold Dr Pepper than engage in fact- checking. Roanoke has been Dr Pepper’s biggest metro market east of the Mississippi, and in 1. Dr Pepper Capital of the World.” One secret to the drink’s success in the area? That story about Wade Morrison’s youthful heartbreak at the hands of Dr. Pepper’s daughter may or may not have been true, but the local romance resonated with Roanoke’s soda drinkers and appeared prominently in area promotions. A Special Variant Disappeared in 2. For 1. 21 years, a bottling plant in Dublin, Texas made and bottled Dr Pepper. By 2. 01. 2, the Dublin Bottling Works was the country’s tiniest bottler and also the most unusual. Its “Dublin Dr Pepper” was still being made with cane sugar years after the rest of the country had switched to high fructose corn syrup. It was also sold in special retro bottles. After a yearlong legal dispute over distribution territories and labeling, in 2. Dr Pepper Snapple Group bought the franchise rights to the area and discontinued Dublin Dr Pepper. However, the news wasn’t all bad for fans of the product – Dr Pepper Snapple Group agreed to keep making real- sugar Dr Pepper for this region of Texas. There’s a Dr Pepper Museum. If you need to inject some Dr Pepper into your next road trip, Waco is home to a museum devoted to its native beverage, including its creation and iconic advertising campaigns like 1. Carbohydrates, such as starches, fruits, dairy and starchy vegetables, is the food group that affects glucose levels in the body. Carefully monitoring carbohydrate intake is a main component of the diabetic diet; eating three meals each day that are roughly equivalent in size can help control blood sugars. A registered dietitian can help you plan a diet customized to your individual needs. Breakfast. Eating breakfast is an important first step in healthy eating throughout the day. For a person on a diabetic diet of about 1,8. A sample breakfast may consist of a 1- ounce egg white omelet with mushrooms and green peppers, two slices of wheat toast with a tablespoon of trans fat- free margarine and a cup of skim milk. For those who prefer a cold breakfast, try 6 ounces of plain, low- fat yogurt topped with a cup of fresh blueberries and an ounce of slivered almonds. Lunch. Planning ahead for lunch may help people who are on the go during the day or have busy work schedules ensure they eat a healthful meal. Lunch should consist of four servings of carbohydrates, or roughly 6. For example, a grilled cheese sandwich prepared on whole- wheat bread, 1 1/4 cups of cubed watermelon and a glass of skim milk make for a filling and healthful lunch. Pair it with a small side salad with low- fat dressing to round out the meal. Another option is one- half cup of chicken salad with sliced tomatoes, lettuce and other veggies of your choice, packed in a whole- wheat pita pocket and paired with 1. Dinner. Round out the day with a balanced dinner consisting, again, of four carbohydrate servings, two vegetable servings, two fats and three meat exchanges. Baked salmon provides a healthy dose of omega- 3 fatty acids; a 3- ounce portion alongside two- thirds of a cup of wild rice, a cup of steamed green beans, a cup of skim milk and a half cup of unsweetened apple sauce for dessert makes for a filling and diabetic- friendly dinner option. Vegetarians may enjoy 1 . An example may include a tablespoon of peanut butter or other nut butter spread on three squares of graham crackers. Or try a half cup of low- fat cottage cheese with a half cup of peaches canned in their own juices. You could also make a trail mix with small pretzel twists, raisins and almonds. A serving size would be about a third of a cup. Throughout the day, water and other calorie- free beverages can be consumed as free foods, which are foods that can be eaten without concern for them affecting blood glucose levels. About the Author. February 1. 4, 2. We have tremendous power over our health destiny and longevity. Below is an approximation of this video’s audio content. To see any graphs, charts, graphics, images. No disease that can be treated by diet should be treated with any other means. Wrangham, with his hard-won experience in eating like a chimpanzee, tends to assume that—with some exceptions such as fruit—cooked food tastes better than raw. Energy and the Human Journey: Where We Have Been; Where We Can Go. By Wade Frazier. Version 1.2, published May 2015. Version 1.0 published September 2014. Chimpanzees are our closest living relatives, and yet they were unknown to most of the world until Charles Darwin wrote about and popularized them in 1. Much about them has only been discovered recently, and misconceptions abound due to the exaggerations and artistic license used in works of fiction. Nevertheless, our similarities and differences are not what many people think. By learning about our relatives we can better understand ourselves. Chimpanzees are often incorrectly called monkeys, but they are actually in the great ape family just like us. The other great apes are orangutans and gorillas. Locusts and Wild Honey The idea of eating locusts or grasshoppers is repulsive to many, but keep in mind that most think nothing of eating a cow or a chicken’s flesh. The Paleolithic period represents just the last two million years of human evolution. What did our bodies evolve to eat during the first 90% of our time on Earth? There is only one species of human alive at present: homo sapiens. In the past, many scientists tried to argue that there were several species of human, and would often hasten to add that they themselves belonged to the . However, all humans can produce fertile children and so we are all the same species. Chimpanzees, on the other hand, are actually two species: pan troglodytes, the common chimpanzee, and pan paniscus, the gracile chimpanzee or bonobo. These two types of chimpanzee are completely separate species. Humans and both chimpanzee species evolved from a common ancestor, possibly sahelanthropus tchadensis, between five and seven million years ago. Only fossils of this ancestor remain. It is often said that humans and chimpanzees share 9. Don’t Eat Like a Caveman By Melody Cherny . Fad diets tend to promise a lot, but they really rely on one thing: short-term weight loss and health.DNA. Genetic comparison is not simple due to the nature of gene repeats and mutations, but a better estimate is somewhere from 8. This figure may still sound impressive, but most DNA is used for basic cellular functions which all living things share. For example, we have about half the same DNA as a banana, and yet people do not use this to emphasize how similar bananas are to us! So 9. 5% does not say as much as it first appears to. Chimpanzees have 4. It is thought that this is because in a human ancestor, two pairs of chromosomes fused into a single pair. Interestingly, humans have some of the least genetic variation of all animals, which is why inbreeding can cause genetic problems. Even two completely unrelated humans are usually genetically more similar than two sibling chimpanzees. The brain of a chimpanzee has a volume of 3. L on average. In contrast, humans have a brain size of 1. L on average. Brain size alone, however, is not an absolute indicator of intelligence. There have been Nobel Prize winners with brains ranging from below 9. L all the way up to over 2. L. The structure and organization of the various parts of the brain is a better way of determining intelligence. Human brains have a high surface area because they are much more wrinkled than chimpanzee brains, with greater numbers of connections between many of its parts. These, as well as a relatively larger frontal lobe, allow us much more of the luxury of abstract and logical thought. Chimpanzees spend a great deal of time socializing. Much of their socializing is grooming each other. Juvenile and adolescent chimpanzees will often play with, chase, and tickle each other, as will adults with their offspring. Shows of affection include hugging and kissing, which are done between chimpanzees of any age or gender. Bonobos are especially frisky, and nearly every show of affection is done sexually, regardless of gender. Chimpanzees strengthen friendships by spending extensive time grooming each other. Humans spend a comparable time socializing, albeit more through talking than grooming. Nevertheless, much of the vast amounts of inconsequential chatter we produce is simply a more sophisticated version of chimpanzee grooming – it serves little other purpose than to strengthen our relationship bonds. Humans also demonstrate stronger relationships through physical contact – a pat on the back, a hug, or a friendly shove. Primate social group sizes closely reflect their brain sizes. Chimpanzees have about 5. Language and Facial Expressions. Chimpanzees have complex greetings and communications which depend on the social statuses of the communicating chimps. They communicate verbally using a variety of hoots, grunts, screams, pants, and other vocalizations. Most of their communication, however, is done through gestures and facial expressions. Many of their facial expressions – surprise, grinning, pleading, comforting – are the same as those of humans. However, humans smile by bearing their teeth, which is for chimps and many other animals a sign of aggression or danger. A much greater portion of human communication is done through vocalizations. Humans uniquely have complex vocal chords, allowing us a great range of sounds, but preventing us from drinking and breathing simultaneously like chimpanzees can. Moreover, we have very muscular tongues and lips, allowing us accurate manipulations of our voices. This is why we have pointy chins whereas chimps have receding chins – we attach our many lip muscles to the prominent lower chin, but chimpanzees lack many of these muscles and so do not need a protruding chin. Chimpanzees and humans are both omnivorous (eat plants and meat). Humans are more carnivorous than chimpanzees, and have intestines more refined towards the digestion of meat. Chimpanzees will occasionally hunt and kill other mammals, often monkeys, but otherwise restrict themselves to fruit and sometimes insects. Humans are much more dependent on meat – humans can only obtain vitamin B1. Based on our digestive system and the lifestyles of extant tribes, it is thought that humans have evolved to eat meat at least once every few days. Humans also tend to eat in meals rather than continuously eating throughout the day, another carnivorous trait. This may be due to meats only being available after a successful hunt, and so are eaten in large quantities but infrequently. Chimpanzees will graze on fruits constantly whereas most humans will eat no more than three times in a day. Bonobos are renown for their sexual appetite. Common chimpanzees can become angry or violent, but bonobos defuse any such situation through sexual pleasure. They also greet and show affection to each other through sexual stimulation. Common chimpanzees do not engage in recreational sex, and mating only takes ten or fifteen seconds, often whilst eating or doing something else. Friendships and emotional attachments have no bearing on with whom a common chimpanzee mates, and a female in heat will generally mate with several males, who sometimes patiently wait their turn directly after each other. Humans experience sexual pleasure, like bonobos, however even sex for reproduction only takes much longer and requires more effort; long- term partnerships naturally form as a result. Unlike humans, chimpanzees have no concept of sexual jealousy or competition, as they do not take long- term partners. Both humans and chimpanzees are able to walk bipedally (on two legs). Chimpanzees will often do this to see further ahead, but prefer to move on all fours. Humans walk upright since infancy and have evolved bowl- shaped pelvises to support their internal organs while doing so. Chimpanzees, leaning forward during movement, do not need to support their organs with their pelvis and so have broader hips. This makes childbirth much easier for chimpanzees than for humans, whose bowl- shaped pelvis is in opposition to a large birth canal. Human feet are straight with toes at the front to help push directly ahead when walking, whereas chimpanzee feet have opposable big toes and are more like strong hands than feet. They are used for climbing and crawling, involving sideways, diagonal, or rotating movements. Humans have white around their irises, whereas chimpanzees usually have a dark brown color. This makes it easier to see where other humans are looking, and there are several theories as to why this is so. It may be an adaption to more complex social situations, where it is an advantage to see whom others are looking at and thinking about. It may help when hunting silently in packs, where eye direction is vital to communication. Or it may simply be a genetic mutation with no purpose – white around the iris is seen in some chimpanzees also. Both humans and chimpanzees can see in color, helping them to choose ripe fruits and plants to eat, and have binocular vision; their eyes point forward in the same direction. This helps see in depth and is crucial to hunting, rather than eyes on the side of the head like rabbits which help avoid being hunted.
